Happy Fourth of July! Cannot believe it is already here. Today's plans are simple. We are getting together (still gathering outside, as that is still the safest thing to do, in my opinion) for Pal's (a regional burger joint) burgers and fries, followed by Peggy Ann's apple pie and ice cream. My husband and I are vegetarian, so we will actually get their grilled cheese with onion and tomato and add vegan bacon to it. Super easy, no mess, no hot cooking to do. Just fun food with family and friends.
See the pretty cake? A very good girlfriend of mine made that for us. It's a homemade strawberry cake, and it is so good. The frosting is killer good and the cake part is moist without being soggy. It really, really does taste like summer on a plate, and it smells heavenly, like you're leaning over a strawberry patch on a warm day picking strawberries and a breeze blows through and you can smell the over-ripe patch on that light wind. This cake will not survive the coming week. It'll be gone in a flash.
The flower gardens are starting to really show off. Look at those zinnia patches! In four more weeks, they'll win the metaphorical award of "most gorgeous thing on the planet," at least the one that I, personally, award in my head! Cannot wait for the monarchs to take over. Slowly, but surely, they're making their appearance. It's mesmerizing, to say the least.
The county fair is getting closer! Funnel cake, here I come (I think . . . . it'll depend on the delta variant, whether or not I brave the trip to the fair). I think summer will fly by like the rest of the year has already done. Our big project got delayed by another week due to some materials they need being held up out west because of flooding, which impeded transport. Sigh. It's always something. Ah, well, it'll get done when it's supposed to get done, not necessarily in the timing that I wanted. That's okay. It's not all about me, it's about those things we don't know and the life adjustments that are made that keep us on a better track, even if we don't think it does or don't realize why. C'est la vie.
This week, heck or high water, I hope to get a Sonic ocean water. It's just going to be the week for that, you know? Right now, it's 56 degrees, so you wouldn't think that's the case, but Monday and Tuesday are 89 degrees with moderate humidity. That's perfect for my Sonic tradition. It's the little luxuries that I love.
Wherever you are, may those little luxuries find their way to you - or perhaps you can create them yourself - and add something special to your summer days. Listen to that old song "A summer wind came blowing in from across the sea . . . ." it's a song for a hammock or lawn chair, ice cold sweet tea, a book and deep thoughts about which scary movie you want to watch next on your list. Love to you on this Sunday, the Fourth of July. God bless America!
